Introduction
Hi, I’m Jessica.
A few weeks ago, I installed a routine Windows update on my laptop. Everything seemed normal at first. The update completed successfully, the system restarted, and my desktop looked exactly the same as before. But later that evening when I opened a game I usually play to relax, something felt completely off.
The game that normally ran smoothly suddenly started lagging and stuttering. Movements were delayed, frame rates dropped randomly, and sometimes the screen froze for a moment before continuing. At first, I thought it might just be my internet connection acting up. But even after restarting my router and closing background apps, the lag didn’t disappear.
If you’ve ever experienced something similar after installing a Windows update, you’re definitely not alone.
Windows updates are designed to improve system stability, security, and compatibility. However, sometimes updates can temporarily disrupt system performance, especially when it comes to gaming performance.
Several things can cause games to lag after an update. Sometimes graphics drivers become incompatible with the new Windows version. In other cases, background services introduced by the update may consume system resources. Network configurations may also change, which can affect online gaming.
Another common reason is corrupted system files or outdated drivers that conflict with the updated operating system.
When I started investigating the issue, I discovered that small changes made by Windows updates can sometimes affect how hardware components like the GPU, CPU, and network adapter communicate with games.
The good news is that these issues are usually temporary and can be fixed with a few troubleshooting steps.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through several solutions that can help fix game lag after a Windows update, so your system can return to smooth gaming performance.
1. Restart Your Computer After the Update
One simple step that many people overlook after installing a Windows update is restarting the system again.
Even though Windows usually restarts automatically after installing updates, some background services may still require a second restart to complete configuration changes.
When I experienced game lag after my update, the first thing I tried was restarting the computer again. Surprisingly, this simple step resolved several minor system glitches.
Updates sometimes install additional drivers or background components that only activate properly after the system has restarted completely.
Restarting clears temporary processes, reloads system drivers, and ensures that the update has fully integrated with the operating system.
It’s also a good idea to close unnecessary applications before restarting so the system can reboot cleanly.
After restarting, try launching your game again to see whether the lag improves.
While this solution may seem basic, it often resolves minor performance problems that appear immediately after updates.
2. Update Your Graphics Drivers
Graphics drivers play a crucial role in gaming performance.
When Windows updates install new system components, older graphics drivers may become incompatible or unstable.
This mismatch can cause frame drops, stuttering, and graphical lag during gameplay.
To fix this, open Device Manager and expand the Display Adapters section.
Right-click your graphics card and select Update Driver.
Alternatively, you can download the latest drivers directly from the manufacturer’s website such as:
-
NVIDIA
-
AMD
-
Intel
Installing the newest graphics driver ensures compatibility with the updated Windows system.
Many driver updates also include performance optimizations for popular games, which can significantly improve gameplay.
3. Check Background Apps Consuming Resources
After some Windows updates, new background processes may start running automatically.
These processes can consume CPU, memory, or disk resources, which may affect gaming performance.
Open Task Manager and review the list of running applications.
Look for programs that are consuming unusually high CPU or memory usage.
Closing unnecessary background apps can free up system resources and improve gaming performance.
This is especially important for systems with limited RAM.
4. Disable Windows Game Bar
Windows Game Bar is designed to enhance gaming experiences, but on some systems it can cause performance issues.
To disable it, open Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar.
Turn off the option that allows Game Bar to record clips and capture gameplay.
Disabling this feature can sometimes reduce system overhead and improve game performance.
5. Check Internet Connection for Online Games
If the lag occurs mainly in online multiplayer games, the issue may be related to network performance.
Windows updates sometimes modify network drivers or reset certain connection settings.
Try restarting your router and modem.
You can also test your connection speed using an online speed test tool.
Switching from WiFi to a wired Ethernet connection often provides a more stable gaming experience.
6. Adjust Power Settings for Maximum Performance
Windows may switch power settings after updates, especially on laptops.
Open Control Panel → Power Options.
Select High Performance mode.
This ensures that your CPU and GPU run at their maximum capability during gaming.
Balanced power settings sometimes limit system performance to conserve energy.
7. Verify Game Files
If the lag started after an update, some game files may have become corrupted.
Most gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games, or Battle.net allow you to verify game files.
This process checks the game installation and replaces any damaged files automatically.
Verifying files can fix performance issues caused by missing or corrupted game data.
8. Run System File Checker (SFC)
Corrupted Windows system files can also cause performance problems.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
This scan checks system files and repairs corrupted ones.
Once the process completes, restart your computer.
9. Check for Additional Windows Updates
Sometimes Microsoft releases patch updates shortly after a major update.
These patches fix bugs and compatibility issues that appear after the original update.
Open Settings → Windows Update and check for new updates.
Installing them may resolve gaming performance issues.
10. Roll Back the Windows Update
If the lag started immediately after a major update and nothing else fixes the issue, rolling back the update may help.
Open Settings → Windows Update → Update History → Uninstall Updates.
Select the most recent update and uninstall it.
This restores the system to the previous stable version.
Additional Tips to Improve Gaming Performance After Windows Updates
After I fixed the lag issue on my system, I realized that Windows updates can sometimes change small system settings that affect gaming performance. Even though updates are meant to improve security and stability, they occasionally reset certain configurations that gamers rely on for smooth performance.
One thing I now check regularly is graphics settings within Windows itself. Windows includes a feature called Graphics Performance Preferences that allows you to assign specific games to use high-performance GPUs. If your computer has both integrated graphics and a dedicated graphics card, Windows may occasionally switch the game to the weaker GPU after an update.
You can adjust this by going to Settings → System → Display → Graphics Settings and setting your games to run in High Performance mode. This ensures that the dedicated GPU handles the workload instead of the integrated graphics processor.
Another helpful step is checking startup programs. Some Windows updates may re-enable applications that launch automatically when the system boots. Programs like cloud sync services, update assistants, or background utilities can consume system resources while you’re gaming.
To manage startup apps, open Task Manager → Startup tab and disable any programs that you don’t need running when the system starts.
Storage performance can also play a role in gaming lag. If your game is installed on a drive that’s nearly full, loading times and stuttering may occur more frequently. I try to keep at least 20–25% free space on my storage drive, especially on SSDs, because this allows the drive to operate efficiently.
You may also want to check whether Windows Defender or other antivirus scans are running during gameplay. Sometimes after updates, Windows schedules background scans that consume system resources. Temporarily pausing scheduled scans while gaming can help reduce performance interruptions.
Another factor to consider is in-game graphics settings. Occasionally, updates reset certain configurations inside games themselves. For example, the game might automatically increase graphical settings based on newly detected drivers or hardware. Lowering settings like shadows, reflections, or anti-aliasing slightly can improve performance without significantly affecting visual quality.
For online games, monitoring network latency (ping) can also help identify whether lag is caused by internet connectivity rather than system performance. Tools inside many multiplayer games display real-time ping values, which can reveal whether the issue is network-related.
Finally, keeping your gaming software platforms—such as Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or other clients—updated ensures compatibility with the latest Windows updates and system drivers.
Since discovering these small adjustments, I’ve found that gaming performance remains much more stable even after major system updates. While occasional lag can happen after updates, understanding how to optimize your system helps ensure your games continue running smoothly.
