Hey friends, I’m Jessica, and if you know me, you already know how much I love to travel and explore hidden gems across the United States. My recent road trip took me to the heart of the South — Alabama — and wow, what an experience! From soulful cities to stunning beaches, this state is full of charm, history, and scenic beauty that totally surprised me.
Whether you’re into music, history, or outdoor adventures, Alabama offers a mix of it all. So, grab your coffee (or sweet tea, if you want to go Southern-style!) and let’s explore the best places to see in Alabama.
1. Birmingham – The Magic City
Let’s start with Alabama’s largest city, Birmingham. Often called the “Magic City” for its rapid growth during the industrial age, Birmingham has transformed into a lively hub of culture, food, and history.
I visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my trip. The museum beautifully documents the civil rights movement and honors the brave individuals who fought for equality.
After that, I explored the trendy Avondale district filled with local breweries and restaurants. If you’re a foodie like me, make sure to try Saw’s BBQ — their pulled pork sandwich is unforgettable!
2. Montgomery – Where History Comes Alive
Montgomery, the state capital, is a must-visit for history lovers. It played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, and the spirit of that era still resonates throughout the city.
I stood on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ended the historic Selma-to-Montgomery march. Don’t miss the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice — both are incredibly moving and educational.
Downtown Montgomery is also super walkable, and I found some charming cafes around Commerce Street where you can enjoy Southern-style coffee and pastries.
3. Mobile – Port City with a Mardi Gras Spirit
Did you know Mobile actually hosted the first Mardi Gras celebration in the U.S. — even before New Orleans? That’s right! The city’s French-inspired architecture, vibrant parades, and festive energy make it an absolute delight.
I loved exploring Dauphin Street, which is lined with colorful buildings, boutique shops, and live music venues. If you visit during Mardi Gras season (February or early March), prepare for an explosion of color and excitement!
Also, take a walk around the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. It’s a fascinating piece of naval history, and you can even step aboard the massive ship.
4. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach – Alabama’s Hidden Paradise
When I think of Alabama, I used to picture cotton fields and small towns, but Gulf Shores changed that image completely. This coastal gem along the Gulf of Mexico is pure paradise — sugar-white sand, turquoise waters, and plenty of sunshine.
You can relax on the beach, go dolphin watching, or even try kayaking through the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. I stayed at a cozy beachfront Airbnb, and it was the perfect blend of peace and fun.
Tip: Visit during late spring or early fall to avoid crowds and enjoy warm weather without the summer rush.
5. Huntsville – The Rocket City
If you’re fascinated by space (like me!), then Huntsville will blow your mind. It’s home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, where you can see real rockets, astronaut suits, and even try simulators used in NASA training.
I felt like a kid again walking through exhibits about the Apollo missions and the International Space Station. Huntsville is also known for its tech scene and scenic outdoors.
Take a drive up Monte Sano Mountain for some breathtaking views and hiking trails. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset after a full day of exploration.
6. Tuscaloosa – College Town Energy
Tuscaloosa is famous for the University of Alabama, and even if you’re not a football fan, you’ll love the energy here. The moment I arrived, I could feel the college-town vibe — fun, friendly, and full of life.
I took a stroll through the University of Alabama campus, which is stunning with its red-brick buildings and huge oak trees. Game days are a big deal here, so if you’re visiting in the fall, catch a Crimson Tide football game for the ultimate Alabama experience.
For dinner, stop by Dreamland BBQ, one of the most iconic BBQ joints in the South.
7. Little River Canyon National Preserve – Nature’s Wonderland
For nature lovers, Little River Canyon near Fort Payne is a slice of heaven. The canyon is one of the deepest east of the Mississippi River and offers stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and picnic spots.
I went on the Little River Falls Trail, and the view was absolutely worth the effort — the water cascades down into a crystal-clear pool that’s perfect for photos.
Bring your hiking boots and a good camera; you’ll want to capture every bit of this natural beauty.
8. Muscle Shoals – The Sound of Alabama
As a music lover, visiting Muscle Shoals was on my bucket list for years. This small town is known worldwide for its legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, where stars like Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones recorded iconic tracks.
You can take a guided tour of the studio and even see the original instruments and recording equipment used in the 1960s and ’70s. It’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates classic music history.
The town itself is peaceful and surrounded by the scenic Tennessee River, making it a great stop for both culture and relaxation.
9. Selma – A Symbol of Courage
Selma may be a small town, but it carries huge historical significance. The Edmund Pettus Bridge, where the 1965 “Bloody Sunday” march took place, stands as a powerful symbol of the fight for civil rights.
Walking across that bridge gave me chills — it’s a moment that makes you reflect deeply on the struggles and progress of our nation.
You can visit the Selma Interpretive Center to learn more about the events that shaped this city and the people who made history here.
10. Cheaha State Park – The Highest Point in Alabama
If you love mountain views, then Cheaha State Park is the place to go. Located in the Talladega National Forest, this park offers hiking, camping, and some of the best scenic overlooks in the state.
I hiked the Bald Rock Trail, which ends at an observation deck overlooking miles of forest. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or to just unwind in nature.
Fun fact: Cheaha Mountain is Alabama’s highest point, sitting at 2,407 feet above sea level.
Final Thoughts
Alabama is often overlooked as a travel destination, but after exploring it myself, I can honestly say it’s one of the most diverse and welcoming states I’ve ever visited.
From its rich history in Montgomery and Selma, to its music and magic in Muscle Shoals and Birmingham, and its breathtaking natural beauty in Gulf Shores and Cheaha, Alabama truly has something for everyone.
If you’re planning your next U.S. road trip, give Alabama a spot on your itinerary — you might just fall in love with it like I did.
